Japan's LDP Secures Majority in Lower House Ahead of Parliamentary Victory

According to early polling, Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has secured a majority in the House of Representatives. The LDP, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, is projected by NHK public‑broadcast surveys to hold the majority alone, and the Kyodo news agency reports the same result. These figures come from exit‑polls conducted at voting sites. It is still unclear whether that will give the LDP a two‑thirds majority when combined with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP).

In the last election in 2024, the incumbent coalition of the LDP and Komeito had already lost its majority in the lower house. After a defeat in the upper house, former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. He was succeeded by Takaichi, who became the first woman to hold Japan’s highest office. Her approval ratings are markedly higher than her predecessor’s, and the snap election was called in hopes of establishing a clear parliamentary majority.
