Railway Security Summit Planned After Tragedy Killing Train Conductor

After a killing of a train conductor in Rhineland‑Palatinate, the railway operator is convening a crisis meeting. According to “Bild am Sonntag” reports from Berlin, a large security summit is slated for the coming Friday. The agenda will focus on a mandatory body‑camera policy for conductors, increased security staffing on trains, and better protection of station areas.

Bahn‑executive chair Evelyn Palla will lead the meeting, where, alongside Deutsche Bahn management, representatives from the Federal Police, trade unions, industry associations, and other railway companies will attend. The goal is a noticeable improvement in safety for both staff and passengers.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU), who will also be present, told “Bild am Sonntag”: “I welcome the chief’s initiative to bring all stakeholders to the table. After the shocking attack on a conductor, we must examine everything that can enhance security”. He added that the proposals must also be discussed with the states, since the Länder set the security standards for public transport.

The summit comes in the wake of the death of 36‑year‑old conductor Serkan C., who was struck during a ticket check on an early February regional express in Rhineland‑Palatinate and later died of a brain bleed.
