New Heating Law Points to Arrive by End of February

The key points of the long‑promised heating law are set to be presented soon. SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch told the “FAZ” that the outline will be unveiled during the next parliamentary session week at the end of February. Although the points were originally scheduled for the end of January, the entire timetable-aiming for a law by summer-now faces criticism.

Miersch emphasized that the law does not intend to curb climate‑protection ambitions, even though some members of the Union (CDU/CSU) might favor such a move. “In the Union grinding down the climate goals is not a consensus. While some parts of the CDU and CSU may want that, there is also a current focused on protecting creation” he said. He added that the coalition agreement is clear and reflects this position.

He also spoke positively about his working relationship with coalition group leader Jens Spahn of the CDU. “There is absolute commitment between Jens Spahn and me” Miersch said. “After the recent judicial election did not go well, I now receive early feedback on where potential problems may lie within the Union caucus”.

Finally, Miersch praised Chancellor Friedrich Merz, describing him as the guarantor that the CDU’s core remains intact. “With him as chancellor, the factions of the CDU that are more open to the AfD do not prevail” he remarked.
