The BSW is pressing again for a recount of the federal election. According to the party’s statement in the “Frankfurter Rundschau”, it intends to file a complaint with the Federal Constitutional Court in mid‑February.
Fabio De Masi, the federal chairman of the BSW, said, “After we submit our complaint, the case will be handled in Karlsruhe”. He added that if a recount were carried out and the BSW still secured a seat in the Bundestag, Chancellor Merz would lose his majority. In that scenario, Merz would have to bring the Greens into a coalition or find a way to command majorities as a minority government.
The BSW narrowly failed to cross the 5 % threshold in the 2025 federal election, receiving 4.981 % of the second votes. Following the result, the party lodged a challenge with the Bundestag’s Electoral Committee, which rejected it in December. On February 9, founding member Sahra Wagenknecht, together with chairpersons Amira Mohamed Ali and De Masi, will brief on the status of the lawsuit.
