Dresden‑based migration researcher Hans Vorländer expresses strong skepticism about Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt’s (CSU) plans to deport large numbers of people to Syria and Afghanistan. He told the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday that such announcements create “totally false expectations” and that it is far easier to enable voluntary departures.
Vorländer points out several obstacles to the proposed deportations. In both target countries, reports continue to surface of persecution against various groups-whether religious or ethnic minorities, or, in the case of Afghanistan, women more generally. It is unclear whether any “safe zone” exists where security could be guaranteed.
He also highlighted that individual grounds for blocking deportation are often decided by German courts. For those convicted of crimes, another issue arises: will they actually serve their sentences in their home countries, or could they be released immediately?
