On Sunday, Chancellor Friedrich Merz honored the late former Bundestag President Rita Süssmuth, describing her as a “great politician” and a guiding star for Germany’s democratic community.
He said Süssmuth dedicated her entire life to the country, serving as Federal Minister for Youth, Family and Health from 1985 to 1988 and then as President of the Bundestag from 1988 to 1998. During those years she championed equality and the political influence of women, setting standards for tolerance and openness that shaped a modern, inclusive society.
Süssmuth, who passed away at the age of 88, was widely respected for her lifelong commitment to public service.
Merz added that Germany owes her much, and that the federal government will preserve an honorable memorial to her legacy.
