Werder Bremen has announced that head coach Horst Steffen will be released from his contract effective immediately, following a 1 - 1 draw at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The result came after the club’s tenth consecutive Bundesliga match without a win, prompting the management to act.
Club director Clemens Fritz said it was a difficult decision but reflected the team’s assessment that Steffen would not be able to turn the tide of the current winless streak. “We no longer have confidence that Horst can create a turnaround with the squad” Fritz explained, adding that the decision was based on a thorough review of the sporting situation and recent discussions.
Interim coaches Raphael Duarte and Christian Groß will take charge of the squad while the club searches for a permanent replacement. “We are actively looking for a new head coach and will take the necessary time to find the best solution for Werder” Fritz added.
Steffen joined Werder from SV Elversberg in the summer. In his 20 Bundesliga appearances, the team recorded four wins, seven draws, and nine losses, and currently sits 15th in the league table.
