German Heating Market Plunges 627,000 Units Sold Hit Lowest Since 2010

Last year the heating‑industry in Germany sold 627,000 units, the lowest figure since 2010. According to the annual report of the German Heating Industry Association (BDH), published in “Welt am Sonntag”, sales fell 12 % across all product categories, marking another double‑digit decline for 2025.

The industry’s flagship product, the gas condensing boiler, saw a steep drop to just 229,000 units sold-a 36 % decrease from the previous year. Oil‑based heating, which the 2022 Russian invasion had briefly boosted, collapsed again: only 22,500 oil boilers were sold in 2024, a 74 % decline.

Biomass heating benefited from a 23 % sales increase, especially wood‑pellet stoves, which rose 38 %. Still, the 29,000 biomass furnaces sold represent less than five per cent of the total market.

The only clear bright spot was the rise of heat pumps. Sales climbed 55 % to about 299,000 units, displacing the gas condensing boiler as the top choice for domestic heating. However, gas heating remains the dominant appliance in existing buildings.

“The situation is tough and the heating industry faces economic challenges” said Markus Staudt, CEO of the BDH. He called on the government for “finally stable legal regulations and funding conditions”; otherwise, staff reductions and short‑time work are expected.
