Former German foreign minister Joschka Fischer of the Greens believes U.S. President Donald Trump is actively working to dismantle democracy.
“Trump is pursuing an authoritarian course. He wants to turn American democracy into an oligarchy” Fischer told “Tagesspiegel” in its Thursday edition. “The system of time‑limited power, built on free and secret elections, he aims to replace with unlimited personal rule”.
Fischer says the United States had once stood for a great promise of freedom, but “that is over now”.
He points to the upcoming 2026 House elections in November as a test case, predicting “massive attempts to interfere with the elections”.
