The German chancellor, Friedrich Merz of the CDU, announced that the cabinet will re‑appoint the members of the Sustainability Council (Rats für Nachhaltige Entwicklung). The Ministry of the Federal Government issued the notice on Wednesday.
The 15‑member council is charged with helping the government shape the next phase of the German Sustainability Strategy. Its objective is to turn the current strategy into a “citizen‑oriented action plan” that emphasises a hands‑on, action‑oriented format.
The council advises the government on all matters concerning sustainable development. Its members were chosen for their expertise and personal backgrounds, which cover economic, ecological and social dimensions. Beyond advisory duties, the council is intended to introduce the topic of sustainability into society and the public sphere, a contribution that Chancellor Merz said is “very important for the future of our country”.
The new council will consist of six women and nine men. Among the newly appointed members are Stefan Bayer from the German Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies and Bettina Bernadotte af Wisborg, former long‑time managing director of Mainau GmbH. Each appointment is for a three‑year term, appointed by the chancellor. The inaugural meeting of the new council will take place in the near future.
