CDU Aims to Host 2042 Men's World Cup in Germany

The CDU wants to bring the men’s FIFA World Cup to Germany in 2042.
According to a report by the ”Rheinische Post” on Wednesday, this goal comes from a motion presented at the party’s federal congress in February. The paper states: “The CDU of Germany supports a bid for Germany to host the FIFA World Cup for men in the year 2042”.

The motion calls on the federal government to develop a concept for Germany as host country and to support the German Football Association (DFB) in submitting the bid. The “Rheinische Post” notes that the congress is expected to recommend that the motion be accepted.

In the background justification, the authors point to the positive legacy of the 2006 World Cup and the 2024 European Championship that both took place in Germany. “Hosting such an event is an invitation for the world to experience German culture and hospitality” they write. They also observe that an increasing number of bids come from authoritarian states-such as Qatar in 2022 and Saudi Arabia in 2034-seeking to use the tournament to polish their image. Consequently, they argue, it is essential for Germany as a host to promote the core values of football-fair play, rule of law, and democracy-in a clear and decisive manner.
