SoVD Welcomes Social State Reform Proposals as Fundamentally Supportable

The Social Association Germany (SoVD) regards the reform proposals of the social-state commission as fundamentally worthy of support. Chairwoman Michaela Engelmeier told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” that many points in the commission’s report are commendable, especially the overall direction. “The welfare state must become simpler, but the level of protection must not be reduced” she said.

Among the key measures is the consolidation of benefits such as housing allowance and child supplement so that only a single application is needed. Engelmeier underscored the importance of administrative efficiency: “If we can save money this way, that is a good thing”.

She rejected any cuts to benefits outright, arguing that people should not be the ones saved on. Instead, the SoVD sees a combination of increased digitisation, streamlined and bundled payments, and proper work incentives as a strong approach. Engelmeier expects the reforms to take years to implement, so she urges that they begin as soon as possible.
