Left Party Open to Constitutional Change in Social State Reform Push

The Left’s parliamentary group has expressed openness to conversations about amending the Basic Law as part of the planned welfare‑state reform.
Group leader Heidi Reichinnek told T‑Online on Tuesday that they will examine the concrete proposals closely and, as always, decide “in the matter”. She added that if the government truly presents a package that noticeably improves people’s lives, the group is willing to talk.

Reichinnek warned that the party currently lacks the belief that the government still supports the welfare state amid its many attacks. She fears that the reform, under the banner of efficiency, could lead to further cuts for ordinary citizens.

She stressed that the welfare state must not be allowed to abandon too many people. “Those who want to manage poverty differently may call it efficient, but they’re not delivering anything that improves people’s situations” she said.
