German Interior Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Protect Jewish Life on Holocaust Memorial Day

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) told the news channel “Welt” that Germany takes safeguarding Jewish life and institutions very seriously. He said this duty extends beyond Germany’s borders, highlighting the country’s responsibility to tackle imported antisemitism as part of the same commitment. The remarks were made while he was broadcasting from the periphery of the economics summit organized by the “Welt” media house.

Dobrindt affirmed that protecting Jewish life is an ongoing task. “We are constantly working to keep Jewish life safe, and this is our responsibility not only in Germany but also internationally” he said. “We have a huge responsibility, and on a day like today it is important to be fully aware of that”. He emphasized that this protection includes securing Jewish institutions wherever they are, with a particular focus on confronting extremism in all its forms-especially antisemitism.

He added that antisemitism in Germany has grown in recent years, partly due to “imported” anti‑Jewish sentiment entering from abroad. Dobrindt pointed out that Germany confronts this type of hatred just as it confronts antisemitism that arises from domestic right‑wing or left‑wing extremism. “On a day like today it is crucial to remember that battling antisemitism is a collective societal duty” he concluded.
