Rheinmetall And OHB Challenge Airbus In Satellite Project Expanding Space Ambitions

Rheinmetall is looking to broaden its ambitions in space. According to a media report, the German weapons manufacturer, together with the Bremen-based satellite company OHB, plans to bid for the Bundeswehr’s largest satellite project yet-a competition that also includes Airbus. The award could be worth up to €10 billion.

As reported by the “Handelsblatt” on Monday, citing “five people involved in the matter” the proposed satellite constellation, named “SATCOMBw Level 4” would link up to 200 satellites by 2029, enabling armored vehicles, ships, and soldiers to communicate with each other.

The project’s technical concept is said to resemble SpaceX’s Starlink network. An insider told the “Handelsblatt” that the tender could be announced as early as February.
