German Weather Service Issues Alert for Icy Rain in Northeast

The German Meteorological Service has issued a warning of icy rain across the northeastern part of the country. On Sunday evening it announced that parts of Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Berlin and Saxony would be affected.

The warning explains that frozen rain will spill out of the Ore Mountains at the end of the night and continue into Monday, reaching Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern overnight. Localised ice build‑up cannot be ruled out, which could impact both infrastructure and vegetation.

The service cautions that the situation may cause disruptions to road and rail traffic.

A small, but weather‑influential low pressure system is moving northward from the upper Adriatic on Sunday. The combination of this system with the moist air mass leads to heavy snowfall in the western regions and icy rain in the eastern parts.
