After the preliminary conclusion of talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States, the Greens urged European leaders to step up their involvement to end the war in Ukraine.
Agnieszka Brugger, vice‑chair of the Greens’ parliamentary group, told the “Rheinische Post” that the German federal government and its European partners must finally exert greater pressure on Vladimir Putin, provide stronger support for Ukraine, and deliver hard security guarantees. She criticized Germany and other EU states as still “too hesitant” in all areas, arguing that such reluctance prevents Germany being taken seriously on the international stage and fails to adequately protect its own security. Brugger further pointed out that Friedrich Merz, citing the Taurus missile issue, often brings Olaf Scholz to mind, a criticism she levied at him.
The politician offered a restrained assessment of the Abu Dhabi talks, saying that “substantially nothing has moved yet”. She noted that Russian aerial attacks have become even more brutal, aiming to amplify cold, terror and uncertainty, and concluded that no real negotiator is currently willing to engage.
