Denmark Expands Arctic Alliance With Germany After Recent Expedition

Danish Army Chief Michael Wiggers announced that, following an exploratory mission in the Arctic a few days earlier, Denmark would broaden its cooperation with the German armed forces in the region and in Greenland.

He told the news portal Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that Germany sees value in conducting exercises there as training for Arctic operations. “We will deepen our cooperation in the Arctic” Wiggers said. “We will lay the groundwork for further joint exercises in and around Greenland, not only on land but also in the airspace and at sea”. He praised Germany for its strong support and reliable partnership.

Wiggers also rejected calls to review and expand NATO’s regional defense plans as a means to enhance Arctic security. “The defense plans are up to date, but now we must put them into practice during exercises” he said.

In a separate remark, the Danish general lauded U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to erect a rocket‑defense shield, the “Golden Dome” in Greenland. “The Golden Dome primarily protects the United States, and it is an excellent idea to have such a system” Wiggers commented. “It would be useful for defending the entire North American territory”.
