The Deutsche Bundesbank faces a flood of digital attacks every single day.
“Every minute alone, more than 5,000 cyber‑attacks hit the Bundesbank’s IT systems” President Joachim Nagel told the “Tagesspiegel”. When extrapolated to a full year, that amounts to roughly 2½ billion incidents that are blocked at the bank’s firewall. “It’s a constant race” he added.
In response, the Bundesbank has implemented a wide range of safeguards to make its IT landscape as secure as possible. “It starts with security‑verified personnel, then extends to hardened IT systems, cyber‑defence measures, and business‑continuity management” Nagel explained. As a result, the bank has turned into a sort of IT service provider and works alongside other central banks to play a crucial role in the entire Eurosystem.
Still, the Bundesbank can’t promise absolute safety. “No one can guarantee that nothing will ever happen” Nagel said. “But we maintain the highest security standards”.
