The German federal government has ordered the deputy military attaché of the Russian embassy to leave the country.
The Foreign Office explained that the government will not tolerate espionage in Germany, especially when it is carried out under the protection of diplomatic status. “We have called the Russian ambassador in person today and informed him that the person in question-who was spying on behalf of Russia-must be expelled” the statement read.
According to “Der Spiegel”, the expulsion notice follows the arrest of a suspected Russian spy on Wednesday. The deputy military attaché is alleged to have been working for a Russian intelligence agency for many years. According to prosecutors, his contact provided the spy with information related to the war in Ukraine.
