European People's Party Leader Manfred Weber Urges Stronger Germany-Italy Ties with Meloni

The leader of the European People’s Party (EPP), Manfred Weber, has advocated for a significant deepening of German‑Italian cooperation.

“Italy and Germany are guarantors of European unity” the CSU politician told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Wednesday editions). “They are pushing European solutions forward with stable governments and strong leadership”.

The governments of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will meet on Friday in Rome for German‑Italian government consultations. Weber called for strengthening bilateral relations modeled on the German‑French friendship.

“Like the Aachen Agreement, a close friendship treaty between Germany and Italy is also needed” Weber said. “Europe benefits from a close shoulder‑to‑shoulder partnership between Germany and Italy, covering security and trade issues, combating illegal migration, and the future competitiveness of our economy”.
