A pervasive sense of anxiety is stifling genuine political leadership, according to acclaimed German author Navid Kermani, who argues for a renewed emphasis on enthusiasm and conviction within the political sphere. In an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Kermani lamented the absence of politicians capable of inspiring and mobilizing citizens, criticizing what he sees as a prevalent strategy of fear-mongering.
“Anxieties aren’t combated through anxiety itself” he stated. “You don’t inspire people with a political agenda by warning them about the dangers posed by others. Inspiration stems from genuine enthusiasm and a compelling vision”. Kermani expressed frustration at his inability to identify a political figure currently championing his perspectives with passion and energy, claiming a lack of figures capable of igniting widespread support.
His call for a shift in political approach is intricately linked to his deep-seated belief in the enduring value of Europe. He emphasizes that the current geopolitical landscape – marked by a growing divergence between the United States and traditional European alliances and escalating tensions between the US and China – necessitates a reinvigorated focus on the European project. Kermani contends that the necessity for European cooperation has never been clearer, urging policymakers to prioritize and defend the continent’s collective interests.
Beyond political pragmatism, Kermani speaks with an evident emotional attachment, concluding his remarks with a heartfelt declaration of affection for European culture and heritage. “I love Europe, I love European culture” he affirmed. “I cherish its musical, literary, architectural traditions and the way of life that defines Europe”. His comments represent a pointed critique of the current political climate and a passionate plea for leaders to embrace a more optimistic and assertive vision for Europe’s future, one underpinned by a revitalized sense of purpose and shared identity.
