German officials are cautiously optimistic about ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Ukraine, emphasizing the critical need for unified international support while expressing continued skepticism regarding Russia’s commitment to a peaceful resolution. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Florian Hahn, of the CSU party, underscored the unwavering principle that any agreement must be reached “with” Ukraine, not imposed upon it.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Hahn stressed the importance of maintaining a strong and united front among Ukraine’s allies to facilitate a just and sustainable peace. The presence of key representatives from the United States alongside France and the United Kingdom at recent discussions in Berlin signals a renewed focus on coordinating international efforts.
However, Hahn voiced concern regarding Russia’s ultimate intentions. He stated that while these intense diplomatic efforts represent a significant push towards ending the conflict, “What Putin will say about these really substantial and intensive endeavors to end this terrible war remains to be seen”. He further lamented the continuing absence of a discernible willingness to negotiate a genuine peace on the Russian side, raising questions about the viability of achieving a lasting settlement without a fundamental shift in Kremlin policy. The upcoming weeks will be crucial in determining whether these talks can bridge the widening gap between stated intentions and demonstrable action.
