AfD Risks Backlash Over Putin Ties

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is facing a growing internal dilemma regarding its relationship with Russia, potentially undermining its political standing both domestically and internationally, according to Hermann Binkert, head of the polling institute INSA. While the party often claims its Russia policy is motivated by defending German interests, Binkert argues that an “uncritical alignment” with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin directly contradicts this assertion.

INSA’s research indicates that while AfD voters demonstrate a marginally higher affinity for Russia compared to supporters of other parties – excluding the relatively small BSW – a majority within the AfD voter base remains critical of current Russian policies. This presents a significant challenge for the party, as overtures towards Putin risk alienating a core segment of its own support.

The current discord between AfD co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla regarding the appropriate approach to Russia further exacerbates the situation. Binkert suggests this lack of consensus constitutes a damaging internal conflict that weakens the party’s overall position.

Beyond domestic considerations, the internal dispute carries significant implications for the AfD’s international relations. Many European right-wing parties currently prioritize aligning themselves with the Republican wing of American politics under Donald Trump, rather than forging closer ties with Russia. Binkert warns that the AfD’s attempt to navigate this complex geopolitical landscape is precarious. While the party has, until now, managed a fragile balance, he emphasizes that this remains a substantial risk to its future prospects, particularly in securing alliances with key European political allies. The potential for international isolation could significantly curtail the party’s political influence.
