Berlin’s governing mayor, Kai Wegner of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has sharply criticized the current German federal government, urging a reduction in internal political squabbles amidst rising support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). Wegner’s remarks, delivered to the Tagesspiegel newspaper, signal growing unease within the CDU regarding the government’s perceived ineffectiveness.
Wegner stated that the federal government needs to prioritize pragmatic solutions to Germany’s challenges, specifically highlighting a fragile economic climate as a primary concern. “The economic development must worry all of us” he asserted, emphasizing the urgent need for measures to alleviate economic burdens on businesses and bolster Germany’s industrial competitiveness. He also stressed the necessity of increased investment in science and research.
Beyond economic concerns, the Mayor also addressed the issue of social spending, echoing the sentiments of all 16 state premiers. Wegner argued that current expenditure levels are unsustainable and pose an “existential problem” for both states and municipalities, hindering their ability to maintain legally compliant budgets. He demanded swift action from the federal government to implement reforms in this area.
Wegner’s comments reflect a broader tension within the political landscape, with the AfD’s surging popularity potentially shifting the balance of power. In a firm rebuttal to speculation about a potential CDU-AfD alliance, Wegner reiterated the party’s commitment to maintaining a clear separation from the far-right party. He vehemently condemned the AfD’s ideology, labeling it as divisive, fueled by “hate, agitation and division” and explicitly ruled out any form of cooperation. This stance, while seemingly reassuring to traditional CDU voters, also signals a recognition of the AfD’s growing influence and the need for a strong, distinct political positioning.
The call for reduced conflict and a focus on economic and fiscal reform demonstrates a strategic attempt by the CDU to seize the initiative and present itself as a more stable and solutions-oriented alternative to both the current governing coalition and the increasingly emboldened AfD.
