Politician's Car Torched Sparks Outrage

The arson attack on the vehicle of Bernd Baumann, parliamentary director of the AfD faction in the German Bundestag, has been condemned as a “grave injustice” by Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck. Speaking to “Welt” Poseck asserted that such actions are unacceptable within a democratic society and emphasized the need for the prosecution authorities to act decisively.

While acknowledging his own political opposition to the AfD – characterizing it as a threat to German democracy – Poseck explicitly rejected the notion that disagreement justifies resorting to violence. “One need not like the AfD” he stated, “but that is no justification for any attacks, any assaults”. He underscored the importance of utilizing democratic means and rejecting violence as a response to political differences.

Poseck flagged the increasing strength of left-wing extremism as a significant threat to public safety. He highlighted a perceived rise in left-wing criminal activity within Hesse, noting concerning connections emerging between radical groups, including those involved in the pro-Palestinian movement and climate activism. He further criticized what he views as a worrying level of antisemitism inherent in left-wing extremist ideologies.

The Interior Minister suggested a tendency to downplay the dangers of left-wing extremism, particularly within segments of the political spectrum to his left. He expressed concern at what he perceives as a failing to appropriately condemn such activity.

Questioned on potential bans for groups like Antifa, Poseck deferred to the legal system, stating that such decisions are the purview of the judiciary and require adherence to stringent legal criteria for defining terrorist organizations. He emphasized the importance of utilizing tools available to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Verfassungsschutz). He referenced a detailed report from the Hessian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution outlining the scope and nature of left-wing extremism.

Looking ahead, Poseck indicated heightened vigilance surrounding the upcoming founding congress of the AfD’s new youth organization in Gießen. Given the anticipated presence and aggressive rhetoric of left-wing extremist groups, a substantial police presence will be deployed to ensure the safety of participants and uphold their right to assembly. He reiterated that while political opposition to the organization is legitimate, violence remains unequivocally unacceptable.
