The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has selected Erfurt, Thuringia, as the location for its next federal party convention, slated for the first weekend of July 2026. The choice, confirmed by Messe Erfurt, signals a deliberate nod to the party’s increasingly entrenched regional power base and raises concerns about a further shift towards radicalization.
The selection is particularly provocative given Erfurt’s symbolic significance as the political stronghold of AfD’s prominent figure, Björn Höcke. Thuringia’s Interior Minister, Georg Maier (SPD), characterized the decision as a calculated move, suggesting Höcke intends to seize comprehensive control during the convention, which will also include the election of party leadership.
“This is a clear political statement from the AfD, revealing the direction of their journey: towards further radicalization and a close alignment with Höcke and the former ‘Flügel’ [far-right faction]” Maier stated. His assessment underscores fears that the convention will serve as a platform for solidifying Höcke’s influence, potentially further isolating the party from mainstream political discourse.
Former Thuringia Minister President Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) echoed these concerns, stating that the choice of Erfurt is “obviously a reference to Björn Höcke and the former Flügel of the party”. He interpreted the decision as a revealing indicator of the party’s internal power dynamics, suggesting a consolidation of influence amongst hardline elements.
The announcement is already prompting discussions about potential counter-protests, with Minister Maier advocating for civic engagement and demonstrations against the AfD’s planned gathering. The event is expected to heighten political tensions in Thuringia and draws a critical spotlight on the trajectory of Germany’s largest opposition party.
