Merz and Herzog Discuss Gaza Ceasefire

Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) held a telephone conversation with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday, according to a statement released by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius.

During the call, Chancellor Merz expressed hope for a swift agreement regarding the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza within the coming days. He emphasized that nearly two years of conflict necessitate a move towards peace.

Merz reportedly urged that the ongoing negotiations in Egypt must now yield a rapid resolution. He reiterated the necessity for the immediate release of all hostages, including German nationals and called for an end to hostilities, urging Hamas to lay down its arms.

The government spokesperson noted that Chancellor Merz conveyed his condolences and solidarity to President Herzog and the Israeli population ahead of the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023, terror attacks. He affirmed Germany’s commitment to the existence and security of Israel, describing it as an integral element of the German-Israeli relationship and a reflection of enduring historical responsibility.

Furthermore, Chancellor Merz underscored the zero-tolerance policy towards antisemitism within Germany, stating that the German government will undertake all possible measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Jewish communities within the country.
