The German government has expressed confidence in the political stability of France following the unexpected resignation of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, just weeks after his appointment.
Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, responding to inquiries from the dts news agency, stated that there is “no reason” to doubt France’s stability. He acknowledged the process of forming a new government will take a little longer and that Germany will observe developments closely. Kornelius advised allowing space for the process to unfold and granting President Emmanuel Macron the opportunity to assemble a new administration.
President Macron appointed Lecornu as Prime Minister on September 9th. Lecornu recently presented his cabinet, which largely maintained the existing team. This decision reportedly triggered renewed threats of a vote of no confidence from several opposition parties.
Lecornu marks the fifth Prime Minister appointed since Macron’s re-election in May 2022. Macron now has the option of nominating a new Prime Minister or dissolving parliament and calling for new elections.
The recent political upheaval is significantly linked to France’s challenging financial situation and high levels of national debt. Significant cuts to public expenditure are anticipated for the coming year.
