Jam Linke Seeks Drone Disruption Not Destruction

The debate surrounding increased drone sightings across Germany has prompted a call for measured responses and a reevaluation of security protocols. Jan van Aken, leader of the Left party (Die Linke), suggested a focus on employing electronic countermeasures to disrupt drone operations rather than resorting to military intervention.

Speaking on RTL and ntv’s “Frühstart” program, van Aken proposed utilizing electronic jamming devices to interfere with drone communication or disable their engines, arguing against deploying the Bundeswehr (German armed forces) and potentially using weaponry. He acknowledged that further technical research and development would be necessary to effectively implement such methods.

Van Aken further emphasized a clear distinction between the Bundeswehr’s role in international operations and the responsibilities of domestic law enforcement. He voiced opposition to the presence of the armed forces at German airports, underscoring the importance of maintaining this separation as a critical lesson drawn from the history of the Third Reich.

Regarding the origin of the drone observations, van Aken refrained from definitively ruling out the possibility of Russian involvement, but stressed the need for thorough police investigation and standard law enforcement procedures to ascertain the facts. He advocated for a reliance on established protocols rather than immediate military response.
