The German government has expressed a mixed response to the ongoing parliamentary elections in Syria. A joint statement released Sunday evening by the Foreign Ministry and the Development Ministry acknowledged the elections as a potentially significant step towards a more inclusive political landscape.
The statement recognized the desire of the Syrian population, following years of civil war and authoritarian rule, to shape the country’s political future. The elections for the Syrian National Assembly are being presented as an initial, important step toward greater political participation and institutional change. The timing, occurring relatively soon after the cessation of major hostilities, is noted as a positive development.
However, the statement also highlighted crucial shortcomings. It emphasized the need for universal participation across all regions of Syria. The selection process for the National Assembly has yet to occur in the governorates of Hasaka, Raqqa and Suweida and the statement stressed that these elections must be completed. This necessitates an agreement between the Syrian government and authorities in northeast Syria and Suweida regarding the future status of those provinces, requiring compromise from all parties to uphold Syria’s territorial integrity.
The German government reiterated its commitment to advocating for a genuinely inclusive political process in Syria that represents all societal and religious groups. Full representation within the National Assembly is deemed critical to achieving this goal.
Germany has pledged to continue closely monitoring and supporting Syria’s transition period, assisting Syrians in realizing their aspiration for a peaceful and self-determined future. The government highlighted planned measures for Syria’s reconstruction and economic recovery, encompassing areas like healthcare, infrastructure, education, water management, economic development, administrative strengthening and the rule of law. Furthermore, efforts will be directed toward empowering civil society to facilitate participation in the political transition.
