Gaza Deal Hope Rises

Leading figures from Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have expressed cautious optimism regarding the potential for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Norbert Röttgen, CDU’s foreign policy expert and parliamentary group deputy, stated that US President Trump’s call for Israel to immediately halt the bombardment of Gaza provides an opportunity to secure the release of all hostages and bring an end to the hostilities. He emphasized the need for full support of this development and placed responsibility on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to contribute to hostage release and a viable political pathway forward.

SPD’s spokesperson for foreign policy, Adis Ahmetovic, echoed this sentiment, highlighting what he described as a recent breakthrough that fosters cautious optimism. According to Ahmetovic, Hamas has reportedly accepted portions of a 20-point peace plan, alongside Trump’s public appeal to Netanyahu to conclude the war. He noted the positive development of a diplomatic solution becoming more attainable, which could not only alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza but also facilitate the release of hostages and the demilitarization of Hamas.

Both politicians stressed the critical importance of adherence to international law and contractual agreements by all parties. Ahmetovic specifically cautioned against any annexation of the West Bank.

Acknowledging the skepticism borne from recent experiences, Ahmetovic underscored the need for immediate international pressure and a strong role for the United Nations and other mediators. He urged Germany and Europe to actively engage in the diplomatic arena to secure this potential turning point and ensure the swift realization of agreed-upon objectives.
