A growing concern has been voiced regarding the lack of visible solidarity with victims of antisemitism within Germany. Felix Klein, the Federal Government’s Commissioner for Jewish Life and the Fight Against Antisemitism, expressed this sentiment in a recent interview, highlighting a marked decline in the public demonstration of support following the events of October 7, 2023.
Klein noted a significant surge in antisemitic crimes since that date and emphasized that Jewish citizens are experiencing considerable anxiety due to the limited expressions of solidarity. He stated that this lack of support has negatively impacted their quality of life.
Specific instances cited illustrate the heightened sense of insecurity felt by members of the Jewish community. These include individuals altering their names when ordering taxis or food deliveries to avoid drawing attention and the removal of nameplates. This, according to Klein, contributes to a phenomenon where Jewish individuals feel compelled to conceal their identity, with some now refraining from openly displaying symbols like the Star of David. He described this as fostering a perception of Jewish identity as “foreign” within the country.
