Drone Activity Hits Submarine Yard

A Thyssenkrupp shipyard in Kiel, which constructs submarines, was overflown by drones last week. A spokesperson for TKMS, the marine technology subsidiary of Thyssenkrupp, confirmed the incident to the “Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung”, stating that the company is in close contact with authorities regarding the matter.

The origin of the drones remains unknown. According to the spokesperson, the overflight had “no impact whatsoever” on operations within the shipyard.

Responding to questions about security measures, the spokesperson indicated that Thyssenkrupp maintains a robust security infrastructure designed to protect its production facilities. They added that the company continuously monitors the surroundings of its sites. While acknowledging the incident, Thyssenkrupp representatives expressed that they are “not concerned” about the situation.

The overflight in Kiel follows similar drone sightings reported above a clinic and a power plant in Schleswig-Holstein. Prosecutors in Flensburg have initiated an investigation into the incidents. Lead Public Prosecutor Stephanie Gropp informed the Interior and Legal Committee of the State Parliament that the investigations are based on the initial suspicion of a criminal act involving the unauthorized and potentially compromising photography of sensitive locations. The coordinated nature of some of the overflights suggests a possible link between the events.
