Wadephul Urges Immediate Military Draft

The possibility of reinstating mandatory military service in Germany is gaining traction within political circles, with calls for immediate implementation emerging from within the ruling coalition. Johann Wadephul, Germany’s Minister for Europe and International Affairs, has publicly voiced his support for the immediate reintroduction of compulsory military service, stating his position to newspapers of the Funke-Mediengruppe.

His comments come as the German Bundestag prepares to debate a government draft bill next week. This initial proposal outlines a new service model based on voluntary enlistment. However, the draft stipulates that if this voluntary system fails to meet the personnel needs of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) and the security situation demands it, the government and parliament could then consider reinstating compulsory military service at a later date.

Wadephul emphasized that he has consistently advocated for the immediate reinstatement of mandatory service and remains committed to this position. He suggested the current draft legislation may be subject to revisions, aligning with demands from defense policy figures within the Union faction.

The debate is unfolding against a backdrop of evolving geopolitical considerations, acknowledging the need for a thorough assessment of the “overall circumstances” during parliamentary discussions. Further negotiations are anticipated between government factions to finalize the legislation.
