Significant disruptions to Berlin’s S-Bahn service are expected to persist for several months, according to Alexander Kaczmarek, the Deutsche Bahn representative for Berlin and Brandenburg. Addressing concerns raised about the ongoing operational challenges, Kaczmarek acknowledged that current daily incidents often range from 200 to 300, stemming from issues with signaling systems, control centers, track switches and rolling stock.
While a task force established in August has yielded initial solutions to address the issues impacting the Stadtbahn lines, Kaczmarek cautioned against expecting a swift return to a consistently reliable service. He emphasized that resolving the underlying problems requires sustained effort and that unexpected new issues frequently arise. “There isn’t a single lever that, when pulled, resolves everything” he stated.
Despite the ongoing difficulties with the Berlin S-Bahn, Kaczmarek expressed confidence regarding the planned S15 line, a crucial project for the north-south corridor. He anticipates the line will launch in Spring 2026, noting that all construction is now complete.
He also conveyed optimism regarding the Dresden Railway, slated to open in mid-December. This line promises a considerably faster connection between Berlin’s central station and the capital’s airport, BER. “I’m eagerly awaiting the opening day” he commented, highlighting the lengthy, approximately three-decade timeline for the project’s completion. Kaczmarek stated the goal is to significantly improve the current infrastructure situation by the end of the year.
