Germany Mocks Drone Defense Proposals

Germany Mocks Drone Defense Proposals

The German Green Party has responded with a mixture of amusement and critique regarding plans proposed by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) to enhance drone defense capabilities.

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Green Party parliamentary spokesperson Sara Nanni acknowledged the minister’s engagement with the growing threat posed by drones, noting it was positive that Dobrindt was putting forward proposals. However, she expressed skepticism regarding his suggestion to primarily shift responsibility to the Bundeswehr (German armed forces). “He should focus on proposing solutions he, as Interior Minister, is actually responsible for implementing” Nanni stated. She emphasized that internal security falls under his purview and that existing mechanisms for providing assistance, known as “Amtshilfe” are already in place.

The Green Party representative also conceded the “traffic light” coalition government (a reference to the SPD, Greens and FDP) has fallen short in advancing the broader concept of collective defense. “The desire of the SPD to adhere to Chancellor Scholz’s narrative of peace proved too strong, resulting in a loss of valuable time” she explained.

Interior Minister Dobrindt’s plans involve granting the Bundeswehr greater authority in countering drone threats and enabling them to provide “Amtshilfe” to local police forces. The proposal reflects ongoing discussions regarding how best to address the escalating challenges in drone security.
