East Germans Fear Economic Decline

A recent survey reveals a palpable sense of economic pessimism among supporters of several political parties in eastern Germany. Conducted by the polling institute Insa Consulere and published by the magazine “Superillu”, the research explores voter sentiment regarding their personal financial prospects.

The survey, which questioned 1,000 adults aged 18 and over across the six eastern German states, including Berlin, between September 10th and 17th, 2024, found that a significant majority of supporters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), the “Die Basis” (BSW) and the Left party express concerns about their future economic well-being. Specifically, 57% of AfD voters in eastern Germany believe their personal economic situation will worsen, a sentiment mirrored by 57% of Left party voters and 59% of BSW voters.

Contrastingly, voters affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Green Party demonstrate considerably more optimism. Only 19% of eastern German CDU voters and 14% of eastern German Green voters share the same concerns about a deteriorating economy. A substantial 63% of CDU supporters and 53% of Green party voters believe their personal economy will remain stable, while 17% of CDU supporters and 23% of Green party voters anticipate an improved personal economic future.

The findings highlight a distinct divergence in economic outlook among different political affiliations within eastern Germany.
