Germany Urges Eurovision Israel Inclusion

Concerns are growing regarding a potential exclusion of Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest, as voiced by German Culture State Minister Wolfram Weimer. In an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper, Weimer emphasized the contest’s intended purpose as a celebration of artists and diversity, rather than a platform for political division or exclusion.

The Minister stressed the importance of maintaining the Eurovision Song Contest as a festival of artistry, distinct from political arenas. He expressed confidence that the members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) will consider this principle when making decisions about participation, particularly during challenging times.

The EBU recently announced a scheduled online vote in November, allowing member countries to determine Israel’s eligibility for the 2026 contest in Vienna. This vote follows increasing calls for Israel’s exclusion stemming from ongoing developments in the Gaza Strip. Several participating broadcasters, including those from the Netherlands, Spain, Iceland and Slovenia, have indicated they will refrain from participation in 2026 should Israel’s broadcaster not be excluded. The matter remains under deliberation within the EBU.
