A leading figure within the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has cautioned against cuts to healthcare services as a newly formed expert commission begins its assessment of the nation’s health finances. Dagmar Schmidt, deputy parliamentary group chair, emphasized the commission’s primary objective should be to enhance patient care.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Schmidt highlighted the need for genuine structural reforms to improve resource utilization within the healthcare system, rather than resorting to cost-cutting measures. She explicitly stated that the focus should not involve reducing services, privatization, or increasing contributions.
Schmidt underscored the importance of a fair and equitable financing model for a robust and compassionate healthcare system, emphasizing that those with greater financial capacity should contribute proportionally. She stressed that a truly sustainable system requires a commitment to solidarity and shared responsibility.
