Business Fears Rising Far-Right Support

Concerns are growing within the German business community regarding the potential impact of further support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, according to DHL Group CEO Tobias Meyer. Speaking to Focus magazine, Meyer expressed a sense of unease abroad concerning the strengthening of the political right in Germany, emphasizing that political stability remains a significant factor for investment in the country.

Meyer indicated that a minority government led by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), potentially reliant on the AfD for tolerance, would be undesirable for the logistics giant. He stated that DHL is satisfied with the current government configuration, considering the parameters of a majority government.

While acknowledging improvements in business sentiment under CDU leader Friedrich Merz, Meyer noted that economic figures have yet to reflect this positive shift. He highlighted concerns about Germany’s declining competitiveness, citing factors such as excessive bureaucracy and high energy prices as significant impediments to German companies operating on the global market. These challenges, he asserted, are hindering economic momentum.
