Germany Faces Disappointment Winter

The Green Party parliamentary group leader, Britta Haßelmann, has signaled backing for the three nominees proposed for the upcoming election of new judges to the Federal Constitutional Court. In a statement to Politico, Haßelmann expressed confidence in the legal expertise of the candidates, emphasizing the urgent need to fill vacancies and restore the court to full capacity.

Reflecting on the failed election attempt earlier this summer, Haßelmann attributed the outcome to a collective failure, specifically citing shortcomings in the handling of the process by Health Minister Jens Spahn and the governing coalition as a whole. She also noted a lack of leadership demonstrated by Christian Democratic Union leader Friedrich Merz. The previous nominee, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, experienced a campaign marked by what Haßelmann characterized as a smear campaign.

Looking ahead to the government’s planned reforms, Haßelmann cautioned against a failure to swiftly implement them. She warned that without increased momentum, the anticipated period of reform could be followed by widespread disappointment.
