A recent survey conducted by Forsa reveals shifts in German voter sentiment and perceptions of political leadership. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has reached a new high in measured voter preference, securing 27 percent of support among respondents. This represents a two-point increase from the previous week and places the AfD narrowly ahead of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU).
The CDU/CSU bloc remains stable at 25 percent. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has seen a decrease, now standing at 13 percent, a one-point decline. The Green Party also experienced a one-point drop, registering 11 percent. The Left Party maintains 11 percent, while the Basis for Real Politics (BSW) holds at 4 percent. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) records 3 percent, with other parties collectively accounting for 6 percent. Currently, 21 percent of respondents identify as non-voters or remain undecided.
Perceptions of political competence continue to shape voter opinion. The CDU/CSU are still viewed as most capable of solving Germany’s issues by 19 percent of those surveyed, a figure consistent with the prior week. The AfD has seen a two-point increase in this regard, now backed by 13 percent. Meanwhile, the SPD has fallen to 6 percent, a two-point decrease. Both the Green Party and the Left Party are viewed as competent by 5 percent of respondents, respectively. A substantial 49 percent believe that none of the listed parties possess the necessary competence.
Satisfaction with Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has diminished, reaching the lowest level recorded since he assumed office. Only 28 percent of Germans express satisfaction with his performance, while 70 percent hold a negative view. Satisfaction is predominantly limited to supporters of the CDU and CSU, with 64 percent satisfied and 35 percent dissatisfied.
Economic sentiment amongst German citizens has continued to deteriorate. A mere 15 percent anticipate an improvement in the economic situation, while 64 percent foresee a worsening. Twenty percent expect no significant change.
