A recent survey reveals a significant majority of German citizens support increased inheritance taxes on substantial assets. Conducted by Forsa and published by “Der Stern”, the poll indicates that 57% of respondents believe higher inheritance taxes are warranted. Conversely, 38% oppose increased burdens on wealthy heirs, while 5% expressed no opinion.
The findings come amid renewed discussion regarding wealth inequality, spurred by recent commentary. While CDU politician Jens Spahn has highlighted the issue, fellow CDU representative Katherina Reiche has voiced opposition to raising inheritance taxes. Notably, the survey reveals that 57% of CDU/CSU supporters also favor higher taxes on large inheritances, demonstrating a surprising degree of alignment between voters and some party rhetoric.
Support is particularly strong among voters aligned with parties traditionally positioned to the left of the political center. An overwhelming 82% of Green party voters, 83% of SPD supporters and 84% of those who support the Left party advocate for higher inheritance tax rates.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) represents a clear exception to this trend. A majority (69%) of AfD voters oppose increased inheritance levies, with only 25% expressing support.
The survey, conducted by the market and opinion research institute Forsa via telephone interviews on September 18th and 19th, polled a representative sample of 1,008 German citizens.
