Ramelow Slams Spahn Over Judge Selection

Tensions are rising within the German Bundestag as the anticipated election of three new judges for the Federal Constitutional Court nears. Concerns are being voiced regarding the approach taken by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) parties in securing the necessary parliamentary majority.

Bundestag Vice-President Bodo Ramelow has publicly criticized the tactics employed by CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, describing his methods as “exceptionally poor” and questioning the process by which the parties intend to achieve a two-thirds majority. Ramelow expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the SPD (Social Democratic Party) is being positioned as the primary negotiating partner with the Left party regarding the selection of the judges.

The Left party’s parliamentary group leader, Heidi Reichinnek, underscored the existing collaborative efforts between her party and the CDU/CSU, particularly in eastern German states such as Saxony and Thuringia. She suggested that Spahn’s public criticism of the Left party is counterproductive and further complicates the situation.

Despite a lack of strong affinity with the CDU/CSU, Reichinnek indicated a willingness to engage in negotiations. She emphasized that the Left party is prepared to consider discussions aimed at safeguarding the democratic process and improving conditions for citizens, even amidst disagreements. The election remains scheduled for Thursday, but the ongoing disagreements cast a shadow over the proceedings and raise questions about its potential outcome.
