Concerns regarding potential social welfare fraud involving citizens of other European Union member states have prompted the Christian Social Union (CSU) to call for action from the EU Commission and a tightening of EU free movement regulations.
Speaking to “Bild” CSU General Secretary Martin Huber expressed that the EU’s definition of “worker” is inadvertently attracting individuals to Germany who have not contributed to the social security system, potentially leading to misuse of social welfare funds. He stated that Germany should not be perceived as a “social safety net” for Europe.
Huber emphasized that social systems are intended to support those genuinely unable to work or to mitigate short-term job losses, not to finance organized crime structures. He urged the EU to reconsider its approach to free movement regulations and called for fundamental reforms, both at the EU level and within Germany regarding social welfare provisions as outlined in the current coalition agreement.
