The German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) has voiced concerns that the current strategic realignment of Deutsche Bahn is insufficient. GDL leader Mario Reiß, in an interview with the Münchner Merkur, stated a complete restructuring is necessary, emphasizing that the railway should be managed in the public interest rather than as a stock corporation.
Reiß advocated for the separation of the rail network and infrastructure from the federal government, believing this would be vital for the organization’s long-term viability. He criticized the current situation, describing a cycle of substantial financial investment into a company characterized by consistent losses. He suggested a collaborative approach involving diverse stakeholders, including political entities, but expressed skepticism regarding the political will to enact meaningful change, specifically citing differing opinions amongst political parties.
Concerns were also raised about the “Agenda for Satisfied Customers on the Rails” initiative. While acknowledging the stated goals, Reiß suggested that genuine customer satisfaction will only be achieved through concrete implementation plans, verifiable measures and improvements to working conditions for personnel. He cautioned that downward revisions to punctuality targets and the perceived marginalization of employees – who he believes are essential to the functioning of the system – contribute to ongoing concerns.
Despite reservations regarding the broader strategy, Reiß expressed optimism regarding the appointment of Evelyn Palla as the new CEO of Deutsche Bahn. Her familiarity with internal structures and experience in regional transport, including work in Austria, were seen as positive attributes. The ultimate success, however, hinges on Palla’s ability to establish priorities, alleviate employee burdens, address existing challenges and crucially, secure the necessary autonomy from the Ministry.
