Left-Wing MPs To Vote By Conscience

Members of the parliamentary group “Die Linke” (The Left) have decided against coordinating their voting behavior for the upcoming election of judges to the Federal Constitutional Court, scheduled for Thursday. Following a parliamentary group meeting in Berlin on Monday, group leader Heidi Reichinnek stated that an agreement was reached acknowledging the election as a matter of individual conscience, allowing members to cast their votes independently.

Reichinnek elaborated that the election to the Federal Constitutional Court requires a two-thirds majority and should reflect a broad spectrum of society. She further commented on the apparent unwillingness of the conservative bloc to guarantee democratic majorities and referenced what she described as a far-right smear campaign directed towards candidate Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf.

Reichinnek emphasized the importance of the Federal Constitutional Court as a vital democratic institution, asserting that it must not be compromised. She criticized the conservative bloc’s described partisan tactics, arguing that they risk turning the court into a pawn for political maneuvering.
