Germany Calls For Tougher Russia Response

Recent incursions by the Russian military into Estonian airspace and over the Baltic Sea have prompted calls for a stronger response from the German government and the European Union. Green Party politician and foreign policy expert Anton Hofreiter has voiced concerns regarding the escalating situation, emphasizing the need for a firm reaction to Moscow’s actions.

Hofreiter expressed his apprehension, stating that the current trajectory risks increasing instability. He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin may interpret perceived weakness from the United States and European nations as an opportunity to further escalate tensions.

He proposed a range of measures to demonstrate resolve and deter future provocations. Among these suggestions was the possibility of seizing the approximately €210 billion in Russian assets currently frozen. Hofreiter also advocated for restricting visa privileges for Russian citizens, beyond those already targeted due to political opposition and limiting the movement of diplomats to their respective host countries.

He highlighted the significant number of individuals accredited as diplomats in Austria, whom he characterized as potentially engaging in espionage across Europe and questioned why such steps and other deterrent actions have not already been implemented.
