Digital Safety Experts Launch Protection Panel

A new expert commission focused on the protection of children and adolescents in the digital world is set to launch at the end of this month. The body, formally titled “Children’s and Youth Protection in the Digital World” will convene for its initial meeting on September 30th. According to Co-Chair Nadine Schön, the session will primarily focus on introductions and establishing working procedures, with plans to swiftly progress to concrete action thereafter.

The commission’s creation follows from a coalition agreement and will be led by the Federal Minister for Family Affairs. Its mandate encompasses addressing evolving risks within the digital landscape, including issues such as sexual abuse, boundary violations, glorification of violence, undue influence and addiction. The commission aims to synthesize expertise from diverse fields to develop a comprehensive strategy and provide actionable recommendations.

The overarching goal is to facilitate a healthy upbringing for children and young people in the digital age, with a focus on enhancing protection, participation and empowerment. The body intends to produce specific and practical guidance.

Alongside Nadine Schön, Olaf Köller, the executive scientific director of the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education in Kiel, will serve as Co-Chair of the commission.
